I clean mine on the utility room working surface. Mum would never have stood for shoes being cleaned on the table - we only had the one table. Shoes were cleaned outside
Mike

Well I can remember my Dad sat at the kitchen table he'd covered in newspaper to clean his shoes.    No utility room, just the kitchen where we lived, bathed and ate.

We didn’t even have a kitchen table, just the one dining table which was a gateleg and only opened out at mealtimes. Paper or no paper, mum would have had a fit if anyone even thought of cleaning shoes on it

It's not rocket surgery. All you do is shove your fist in it for purchase and off you go. Newspaper is useful but no need for a table. My mum told me that women judged men by whether or not the heels of their shoes were polished. So mine always are.. Thanks mum. ???

My grandmother told me that if I ate fish it would give me brains and if I did not eat the crusts from my bread the curl would go from my hair. By age 11 I had straight hair but I was a little swot.

One thing from my grandmother that really does work. If you have a bruise, coldsore, pimple or boil and you wet it with your spit (especially your fasting spit) it will heal quickly. Apparently human spit contains elements from their immune system.

My mother also had the thing about shoes on the table and opening an umbrella in the house was unlucky.

If you gave someone a purse or a bag for a gift you always had to place a small coin in it so they would never go short. I stll do that if I sell a vintage purse online.

FYI, SSS, Spit contains lisozyme which is an antimicrobial and a natural antiseptic. It's why you stick your finger in your mouth if you cut it.. :)

I always 'hansel' a purse when I give one to someone.  That's what it was called when I was growing up. I bought one of the granddaughters a purse at Christmas, and put £1 coin in it. It used to be a silver sixpence.

My mother would say if I was scowling or looking miserable - you'll stay like that if the wind changes!

My mother had a superstition about black cats "crossing her path". Apparently some people still believe they are unlucky and abuse them. Hence they are not as popular as coloured cats.

They do have a sinister look with those slitty green eyes against solid black fur.

There was one dozing on my sunny window sill today when I opened the curtains. It looked at me, stretched and seemed to expect me to open the window. No great surprise, I have two bird-houses just outside my window.. ;)
