Actually, when it comes to direct taxation, it’s the rich pay, not the poor. The top 1% of earners contribute around 30% of income tax revenue. The genuine poor don’t pay income tax.
What hits the poor is indirect taxation - VAT, duty on petrol, alcohol, tobacco. So far those haven’t been attacked; hopefully that will continue to be the case
