The Gasmask.
« on: Aug 27, 2011, 09:08:05 AM »
I have found this tale among my files and thought that it might interest one or two of you.
I dont want to bore folks with old tales so please tell me if I am and I promise I wont put any more up. I say this because I noticed that although folks are reading
the tales there are very few comments and I really would prefer you to tell me to take a long walk off a short pier if the stories are NOT suitable.  ;D
I wont be offended because I know that they are NOT to everyone's taste.

Its been quite a while since I had a good clear out and there has been much reminiscing as I found stuff that I thought had been thrown out many moons ago,
including old photos which is why I have put this posting up as you will see.

Well before I had a computer I used to buy undressed baby dolls and knit sets to dress them in so that they could be used for a chosen charity of that time. It would usually be guess the name of the doll to raise money that way.

Anyway in 1982 I had a friend phone me up who used to look after the local war museum at the Loughborough Carillon below ......................

He had been donated a WW2 baby gasmask and wanted to know how it was put on a baby. I told him to come and see me and to bring it with him.
As luck would have it I had a doll ready for charity which I had dressed in clothes of that era and when he came I put the doll in the gasmask to demonstrate how the pump worked but it looked so good I told him to take the doll as I had placed it in the gasmask and go and put it in the WW2 section of the museum.
He was SO thrilled with it he had a name plate made with my name on it and had it put across the front of the helmet.
He took this photo of it as it sat in the museum.

I have NO idea Dottie.
Its years since I went and it was a trek because you used to have to walk up the steps to the top of the Carillon to see it .  :(

If anybody else lives in this area please let us know if it is still there, failing that I promise you I will make the trip and look for myself, watch this space!

I have just tried ringing them Dottie to enquire about it but I dont think anyone is there until after 1pm.

If anyone reading this fancies themselves as a Carilloneur have a go on the bells below. Look down the right side where it says play the bells but for goodness sake DONT have the sound up too much on your speakers.  ;)

You can see on the site what tunes will be played tomorrow.

We used to live quite close to the Carillon and it used to be lovely listening to the old songs when they were played twice a week but having had a go on the bells myself on this site I have to wonder how the hell they managed to make a tune out of them.  :o

I found this interestring as years ago I visited  the museum. My  Brother lived in the area and was in the Police Force there.  If you do visit Dottie I will be interested to know how it all looks today.

What a lovely story and picture Maywalk. :) Lots of people do not comment on articles but it does not mean they are not interested May. I must say that I try to reply because it gives feed back and encouragement. Have never visited the Carillon though we have passed by on our travels to other places, will try to go next year, amongst many other places! ::) By the way, one of my brothers was a bell ringer at The Holy Bones church in Leicester for a number of years in his younger days and before that he was in the chior at St Lukes church and was introduced to Princess Margret on its commemoration day. He and my sister were confirmed at that church too. Lovely memories. :)PS Maywalk, that doll was dressed so beautifully. :-*
