State pension for people with private pension.
« on: May 14, 2022, 03:16:44 PM »
A man said that prople who have saved for a private / occupational pension should get an enhanced state pension and other benefits should be cut.
This sounds good to me.

I hate to be politically incorrect, but he sounds deranged, like so many of the individuals around Brum.

It is! Some people who do jobs that we all depend on like street cleaners, shelf stackers, waitresses, etc. barely earn enough to survive let alone make substantial pension contributions into generally poor schemes. The pension (a final salary scheme) from my first decade working is worth more than from the next three (money purchase with glitches).

Count yourself lucky Brian that you had a good job with a final salary scheme that also allowed you to retire early. And stop trying to put those less fortunate down!

I can see Brian in the strong room of his Sutton Coldfield mansion counting his money today before he goes to coffee shops and pubs to talk with strange strangers!

Oddly I went to school with people who went to work for various councils mainly in the Midlands. Several of them opted out of the pension scheme even though it is very good.
When I spoke to them they said the government would have to look after them when they retire.
They now moan they have little to live on.
All I can say is if they paid nothing in they can not expect anything out.

Do you ever see any of your old school pals Brian -i am sure they would be a bit jealous of your success in the pension game--are they the men you meet in Wetherspoons? :)

I knew no long term colleague in the gas industry who didn't subscribe to the final salary pension. 40 years paid 2/3 final salary and many men did well out of it.  No wonder it was privatised!

As a part timer at first I couldn't join. But I got a few years in which got me a small pension at 50 when the local offices closed and I like many were redundant.  That pension was a life saver when my husband was ill.

I then contributed to a local authority pension for the following 10 years, not nearly as good.

I do occasionally come across some I went to school with.
A lot are living in council houses or ones purchased under the right to buy laws,
One said the houses where I live are a load of rubbish and also my car.

I started work in 1954 for Surrey County Council. Once one reached 18, provided that you were full time (can't remember how part-time staff were affected) you had no alternative but to be enrolled into the pension scheme. I was under the impression that was true for all English councils.

I don't know about your house but I am no fan of Micras as they scream OAP! They just aren't cool!

I cannot recall anybody not joining the ICI scheme when I worked there. A friend worked for the council (car tax) and I am sure it was compulsory. But, hey, Brian tells a good tale that pulls us in! 😁

Part timers (both men and women) couldn't join the LGPS until 1995.

Thanks - I had a feeling it was only open to F/T employees, but couldn't be sure
