Football pools, what happened to ?
« on: Jan 22, 2023, 10:25:55 AM »
Whatever happened to the football pools we used to spend so much time
filling in each week, sometimes  or maybe usually whilst setting on the
toilet?
Newspapers used to dedicate about two pages of newsprint to this
pursuit so what became of them ?
Some people won thousands of £s  if they got it right!

I have never done football pools,  but I know what you mean, donkey.
I remember we had to be quiet when my Grandad was checking his coupons on a Sunday morning.

Nan and Grandad also had a little notice in their bathroom which said  -  "Stop sitting here all day dreaming of that £75,000."

Funny what we can remember if the memory is jogged, isn't it.   :D

I remember hearing the results on the radio as a child .
Was  fascinated by the fact that a football team was called Hearts of Midlothian.

I remember the publicity when a woman won 75 thousand on the pools..
She was quoted as saying  'I'm going to spend, spend spend'..
A couple of years back my niece won 100,000 on the Lottery..
A representative called to their home a few days later.. When asked if she made many calls to people winning big amounts she replied.. ' Loads .. I have two more in this area today'...  How times have changed..
Everything will be alright in the end, and if it’s not alright, its not the end.

Yes,  quite, Scrumpy.

That amount wouldn't even seem a lot to some people nowadays, would it.    Not when they hear of the millions won on the Lottery each week.

In 1961, Yorkshire housewife Viv Nicholson won £152,319 in the football pools. When a reporter asked her what she planned to do with her new fortune, she replied, "I'm going to spend, spend, spend!," which is exactly what she did. Her rags-to-riches-to-rags-again story takes her through five husbands, expensive sports cars, fur coats, and jewelry, a battle with alcohol, and bankruptcy as, unable to cope with her new-found wealth and fame, she rapidly spirals downward.

The football results always started with a 'Ssssshhhhhh!' from my Dad. I remember learning how to guess the second score by listening to the tone of voice.

When I got older, I remember the pools collector knocking every week only to be told that I had forgotten to fill it out, so obviously I never won anything on the pools.
Gagged for a quiet life. Goodbye to free speech.
