Golf

Ryder cup 3 days of fantastic TV viewing. What surprises me there is very little interested in the sport on the forum. When its one of the few sports which you can play and enjoy. I was 74 when I started playing, and will be 84 shortly. I am not a good player but still enjoy playing and getting great company which a lone pensioner needs.

Sorry Hugh IMO golf courses are a threat to the environment !

Sorry Muddy but golf courses are all nature reserve. Wild life just ignore golfer who pass them every 10 minutes or so  No dogs or off road motor bikes to disturb the wild life.

Your statement Muddy far from the truth take away golf courses would be a threat to the environment. Golf courses are designed to make area wild life friendly. Strips of short grass in the centre lined by short second cut grass then there is shrubs trees and uncut grass and rather deep this time of the year. Golfer move round quietly in groups of four or less ten minutes apart. I seen deer dropping on the course where I play but never seen a deer. Wild birds know we carry food in our bags and will raid while you are putting. I see more wild life while playing golf than walking my dog in the forest. Come dusk wild life have it all to themselves.

I have to say some golf courses look better than parks, as they're in decline ..... the one that is truly fab is Augusta, the Masters.
Years ago I used to enjoy watching that one on BBC simply for the stunning scenery .... not to mention the turtles who lived in one of the lakes.

Yes Morty golf courses are really look after by teams of ground keepers. Hence membership quite expensive costing thousands of pounds in many clubs. The club I am with quite cheap at £900 for five day mid week membership. In the USA you quite often see alligators wandering round on the golf course. As you say even if you are not interested in golf seeing stunning scenery and enjoying wild life makes it worth watching.

My leagues club also owns a golf club, I think the cost of membership is $1250 a year (£625) for full 7 day membership and about $900 for five day. It is a very competitive business with several golf clubs in the area.

I think my club made a big mistake buying the golf club. As a normal member of the club I pay $7 for a three year membership which also enables me to use the Golf Clubhouse for drinking (I don't) and get a discount on a social round of golf (I'd rather have a lobotomy)

OH watched the highlights of the Ryder Cup, I caught some of it.  Excellent play, and well done Europe!

When I was about my Grandfather cut 3 holes in his lawn and my Granny ran up 3 flags on the sewing machine, and off we went with 2 putters.

Comes my father, and Granny says, "Those 2 outside are just playing with their balls."

I could never quite work out whether my Granny was conscious of all the things she said (most of which seemed to lend themselves to  2 interpretations).
