Modern art. Serious or Bunkum.
« on: Dec 04, 2023, 05:01:44 PM »
After an L.S. Lowry painting sold for £900,000 last month. His artwork falls into the genre of modern art as opposed to impressionism or abstract or contemporary art.
And Picasso and Mark Rothko paintings sell for millions.
What are your thoughts and opinions on modern or abstract art?

Good God .... that amount would have given Lowry a fit ...

He sounded a tad dissollusioned back in 1966 when he gave this interview.

‘I want to get out of it. I should have got out of it in 1948, but people wouldn’t let me – “You must paint more pictures.” I was a damn fool to listen. I’ve never searched for all this so-called success. There’s no money in painting – the tax-man takes it all.’ In this interview from November 1966, from the pages of ArtReview ’s

As to modern art or abstract?
Well I'd rather hang a Constable or Turner on my wall than a Jackson Pollack.
Though I do like Kandinsky.

This is going to sound sacrilege.
Much as I like Van Gogh's 'Sunflower'  .... I never realised he painted more than one version and personally I think they look like a 5 year old finger painted them.
I know .. I've got no class.

I have a theory about art:
If you look at towns, 90% of the shapes you see are rectangles and regular shapes that are unnatural. Now go to a natural place, and most of what you see is irregular shapes. There are very few straight lines.
It seems to be largely people who live in urban environments that crave and enthuse about art. People who spend most of their time in the countryside don't seem to need art because it is already all around them. Then the townies come because it's so nice there and try to rectangularise and regularise everything and fu** it all up.

A lot of modern art makes me think of the Emperors New Clothes.

I love Lowry and wish I had one .

I was born in Lancashire and his paintings are evocative of an age that is past .

Lowry was a skilled trained artist .

He once said it took him ten years to paint like a child .

Unless I win the lottery  have to paint one for myself 🙂

By who?
Art is subjective
I don’t like a lot of modern art and admit when I hear people talking BS in arty farty language I think what a bunch of silly bankers. But some like Picasso is genius .
Not everything every painter has stuff that is rubbish but one look at his Guernica says it all .

What a load of BS.

Just today we visited various people here and they all had mostly photos of relatives hanging on the walls.
Very few artists could equal the view out of a window here (or many natural places) for things to marvel at. "Art" can't compete.

Quite the opposite , I didn’t make myself clear .
It’s a huge magnificent powerful work showing all the agony of Guernica.
I like Picasso I especially like his blue period and one of my favourite paintings is child with a dove .
