Jug & Bottle
« on: Dec 06, 2023, 08:52:54 AM »
Does anyone remember the old Jug & Bottle door that some of the older pubs had as a prequel to The Off Licence?

My paternal grandparents had the tenancies of two London pubs and the Jug & Bottle door was very popular with the ladies out to collect a pint or two for the old man to drink with his meal.

Never heard of it .
I know people used to get ale in jugs I didn’t know they had a special door

Is this another name for the  ‘Outdoor’, where as a child you’d buy crisps and a bottle of pop?

I forgot to say, it had a narrow window that slid up and down.

Part of Holgarth’s Beer Lane has a related part in it (near the white arrow)

Who TF was Holgarth?  Maybe that was a typo for Hogarth. Old Billy was a great artist IMO and I really enjoyed his Rake's Progress prints at school as a training manual for my future  ;)
