Barry John RIP
« on: Feb 04, 2024, 05:19:07 PM »
Welsh Rugby has lost another of its legends. Fly half Barry John has died aged 79. Nicknamed 'The King' he was one of the finest half backs ever to play the game, but he found the weight of expectation upon him so great that he retired aged just 29
Thank you for the days, the days you gave me.
The older I get, the better I was!

apologies - memory fade. He retired at 27, not 29

When l was married, my husband loved watching the Rugby on television. He would shout and cheer, or screw up a cigarette packet in disgust if his team were losing.
Occasionally, I watched it too and l remember Barry John. He was a fast player and usually the hero of the team. He seemed very grounded and not a bighead like some sports people.
I was a bit shocked to read that he had died, as another great Rugby player that l remember, JPR Williams also died a few weeks ago.
